Institutional Support & Programs
By Samantha Grace Santos
It is not easy to be a single father – managing everyday work, stressful bills, and all your child’s needs is a lot to handle. There are programs by the government that at least ease the burdens in your life.
With some extra support, you can protect your family, grow your savings differently, and get help when you need it the most.
For Filipino parents, the best way to save is through consistency and discipline. Using high-interest digital banks along with government programs like Pag-IBIG MP2 or SSS retirement savings can help.
Both options can help cover emergencies or plan for the future, along with your children’s education, or even retirement.
Being active in SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG, and having a Solo Parent ID, gives single parents extra support, including money protection, health coverage, housing help, and special privileges designed to make parenting easier.
Here's what you need to know
- Single parents who maintain active status with these agencies and have a valid Solo Parent ID (SPIC) receive additional support, primarily under the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act.
- PhilHealth Coverage: Single parents and their children are automatically covered by health insurance, so they can get medical care when needed.
- Pag-IBIG Housing Priority: Single parents get first choice for government low-cost housing and can often pay in easier, more flexible ways.
- Parental Leave: Single parents who work get 7 days of paid leave each year to take care of child-related tasks, like school events or doctor visits. This is in addition to their regular leave.
- Discounts and VAT Exemptions: Single parents earning less than ₱250,000 a year get 10% off and no VAT on certain items for children under 6, like milk, food supplements, diapers, medicines, and vaccines.
- Education and Livelihood Support: Children may get scholarships, and single parents can access free training or help finding a job.
Being active in these programs gives single parents strong financial support. It helps protect their money, provides health coverage, gives access to housing, and offers special benefits to make raising a family alone easier.

Government help protects families during emergencies, sickness, or money problems. It gives cash, food, shelter, and medical care when you need it most. It also helps people get back on their feet with jobs, training, and housing support. Special programs help those who need it most, like the elderly, sick, or poor. This support keeps families safe and helps them rebuild their lives after hard times.
